Is it illegal in California to paint a blue and white license plate black and yellow?

I have a 2005 model that motorcycle is customized to resemble a 60 bike. I want to pain the current blue on white label that has a yellow on black background. There is nothing anywhere on the web, including the DMV site that says it is ok / not ok. Im sure there is probably not legal, but I wonder if gross negligence or just a fix it ticket.

Instead of looking at Web sites, you should just call the local police or DMV. Websites are good for quick, simple news. Not for a complete list of all the little rules. Ask people who are actually applying it, and you have your answer.
